Let the images and symbols speak and interpret them in the most natural way, regardless of the date. Instead, let the book tell you when it was written. Beginning your study with a date in mind will color how you read the book. My encouragement for you in your study (and the basis of our study) is to not begin Revelation with a date in mind. However, during the previous 100 years the predominant view was an early date for the book (65-69 AD). In the last 100 the predominant view has been a late date for the book (95-96 AD). One of the frustrating parts of dating the book is that scholars disagree over when it was written. I encourage you to read both sides of the discussion. There are many persuasive arguments on both sides of the discussion. The debate on when the book was written continues to rage. Therefore you need to rely on God’s word and your own study of the book, rather than just on my teachings.Īs noted in the introduction material to the class, one of the frustrating aspects of studying Revelation is determining the date of the book. I am not arrogant to think that I will not learn more and change my thoughts again down the road. I have changed my position on some of the aspects of the book since then. I presented a study of Revelation back in 2002-2003. If you have a question or disagree with what is said concerning the book, you will have an opportunity in the Wednesday night study to voice your question or disagreement and we can work together in our studies for a solution. This leads to great confusion because everyone says something different about the book. Instead, they just listen to what everyone else has to say about the book. Many do not read and study the book of Revelation for themselves. I believe this is one of the primary reasons that people have difficulty with the book. Study the book of Revelation for yourself. Try to erase any preconceived notions you may have. Please enter this study with an open mind. Before we begin our study, I am going to encourage you with the same words that I always offer. Many think that the book is intended to be hard. Many people think that the book of Revelation cannot be understood. My goal is to help you understand and apply Gods Word in proper context. The book of Revelation is the book in the Bible that is considered to be shrouded in mystery. One may understand a story or two, but not many have the clarity needed to fully understand the meaning and purpose of the Old Testament language used in the New Testament, especially in the last book of the Bible. This is where many modern-day believers are when it comes to understanding the depth and meaning of the Old Testament. However, if we lived in some other foreign country and you overheard me use that same phrase, what mental picture would you have if you had never been to America? Maybe none because there would be no understanding of the event or meaning. Theres an association there, and that association is key. If you heard me say, We are going to celebrate like it is the Fourth of July, what would you think? When you hear that phrase, what mental pictures come to your mind? Fireworks? BBQ? Summertime? I did not mention any of those words. The purpose of this book is to help the reader journey through the Old Testament into the clarity of Revelation. The book of Revelation is explained in the Old Testament. The Lord would not offer a blessing and then turn it into confusion! So why is this book so difficult to so many? Because the average modern-day believer does not have a firm understanding of the Old Testament. The third verse of this book has a promised blessing: Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it because the time is near. Book excerpt: Many believers see the book of Revelation as a book that is too hard to understand. This book was released on with total page 515 pages.
